Changing the Default Settings for Live View Shooting (Still Photos and Movies) (EOS 5D Mark IV)

Solution
With your camera, you can shoot while viewing the image on the camera’s LCD monitor. This is called "Live View shooting".
This page describes how to change the focus mode for Live View shooting. For details on how to perform easy Live View shooting in default settings, please refer to the 'Related information' section at the end of the page.
Please note that some shooting procedures differ between still photos and movies. To shoot still photos, please refer to the instructions for still photos, and to shoot movies, please refer to the instructions for movies.
REFERENCE
If you handhold the camera and shoot while viewing the LCD monitor, camera shake may cause blurred images. Using a tripod is recommended in such cases.
1. Turn on the camera.
- Turn the camera's power switch to <ON>.
2. Set the Live View shooting/Movie shooting switch to <

3. Display the Live View image.
- For still photos, press the <
> button. The Live View image will appear on the LCD monitor.
The Live View image will be displayed in the brightness level closely matching that of the actual image to be captured.

] tab and then select [Enable] in the [Live View shoot.] option. ([Enable] is set by default.)

4. Select the shooting mode.
- Turn the Mode Dial to select the shooting mode.
Press the lock release button.
Turn the Mode Dial.For focusing with AF (Autofocus), go to Part II. Selecting the AF (Autofocusing) Method; for MF (focusing manually), go to Part III. MF Method: Focusing Manually.
The procedures in Part II and Part III are the same for still photos and videos.
5. Set the lens’s focus mode switch to <AF>.
6. Press the <MENU> button.

9. Turn the < > dial to select an AF mode, and then press < >.

10. Press the <MENU> button and close the menu window. An image will appear on the LCD monitor.
NOTE
While the image is displayed on the LCD monitor, pressing the < 
> button will enable you to set the AF method etc. on the Quick Control Screen.

The next step may differ depending on the AF Method setting, so please confirm your AF mode setting before proceeding.

The camera detects and focuses on human faces. If a face moves, the AF point <

11. Select an AF point.
- When a face is detected, the area frame will be displayed and [ ] will appear over the face to be focused on.
- If multiple faces are detected, [
] will be displayed. Use the < 
> multi-controller to move [ ] over the face you want to focus on. - You can also tap on the LCD monitor screen to select the face or subject. If you tap on a subject other than a human face, the AF point will be switched to [
].

- Press the shutter button halfway to focus.
If no faces can be detected or if you do not tap anything on the screen, the camera will switch to FlexiZone-Multi.
When focus is achieved, the AF point will turn green and the beeper will sound.
If focus is not achieved, the AF point will turn orange.
NOTE
Focusing on a subject other than a human face
- Tap on the subject (or spot) where you want to focus.
- Press the < > or < > multi-controllers and the AF point [ ] will appear on the screen. Then use < > to move the AF point over the target subject.
- Once the AF point [ ] achieves focus, it will track the subject even if the subject moves or if you change the composition.
REFERENCE
- If the subject’s face is significantly out of focus, face detection will not be possible. Adjust the focus manually so that the face can be detected, then perform AF.
- An object other than a human face may be detected as a face.
- Face detection will not work if the face is very small or large in the picture, too bright or too dark, or partially hidden.
- The [ ] may cover only part of the face.
- AF is not possible with a face or subject along the periphery. Aim the area frame over the subject and focus.
- Size of the AF point changes depending on the subject.
You can use up to 63 AF points for wide-area focusing (automatic selection). This wide area can also be divided into 9 zones for focusing (zone selection).

11. Select the AF point.
- Pressing < > or < > will toggle between automatic selection and zone selection. In the < > mode, automatic selection is set automatically.
- Use < > to select the zone. To return to the center zone, press < > or < > again.
- You can also tap on the LCD monitor screen to select a zone. When a zone is selected, tap [
] on the screen to switch to automatic selection.

- When focus is achieved, the AF point will turn green and the beeper will sound.
- If focus is not achieved, the AF point will turn orange.
REFERENCE
- If the camera does not focus on the desired target subject with automatic selection, switch the AF method to zone selection or [FlexiZone-Single] and refocus.
- With Live View shooting, the number of AF points will differ depending on the [ : Aspect ratio] setting. When the aspect ratio is [3:2], [4:3], or [16:9], there will be 63 AF points and 9 zones. For [1:1], 49 AF points and 9 zones.
- For movie shooting, the number of AF points and zones will differ depending on the [Movie recording size] setting. With [
][ 
] shooting, there will be 63 AF points and 9 zones. For [ 
] shooting, 15 AF points and 3 zones.
[AF Method: FlexiZone-Single] The camera focuses with a single AF point. This is effective when you want to focus on a particular subject.

11. Move the AF point.

- Using < > or < > will return the AF point to the screen center.
- You can also tap on the LCD monitor screen to move the AF point.
12. Focus on the subject.
- Aim the AF point over the subject and press the shutter button halfway.
When focus is achieved, the AF point will turn green and the beeper will sound.
If focus is not achieved, the AF point will turn orange.
You can magnify the image and focus precisely with MF (manual focus).
5. Set the lens’s focus mode switch to <MF>.
Once you have completed steps 1-4 of Part I, set the lens's focus mode switch to <MF>.
Turn the lens focusing ring to focus roughly.
6. Display the magnifying frame.
Press the <

] on the lower right of the screen.

8. Magnify the image.
Each time you press the < > button or tap on [ ] on the lower right of the screen, the display will change in the following sequence:

While in magnified view, you can operate < > or tap on the triangle displayed on the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen to scroll around the magnified image.

In the [FlexiZone - Multi] and [FlexiZone - Single] modes, either press the < > button or tap on [ ] displayed on the bottom right of the screen. You can magnify the image by approx. 5x or 10x and check the focus.

＋Tracking].- To move the AF point or select a zone, operate < > or tap on the spot you want to magnify.
- Either press the < > button, or tap on [ ] to magnify the image. Each time you press the < > button or tap on [ ], the magnification ratio changes.
- When [FlexiZone - Multi] is set, the image will be magnified at the center of the zone frame (or image center with automatic selection). When [FlexiZone - Single] is set, the image will be magnified at the AF point.
- At 100% (approx. 1x) magnification, operate < > or tap on the screen to move the magnifying frame. Pressing < > or < > will return the magnifying frame to the screen center.
- Either press the < > button or tap on [ ] to magnify the area covered by the magnifying frame.
- When the image is magnified by approx. 5x or 10x, you can change the magnified area by operating < > or tapping on the triangle on the screen top, bottom, left, or right.
- When you press the shutter button halfway, the normal view will return for [FlexiZone - Multi]. For [FlexiZone - Single], AF will proceed with the magnified view.
- With Servo AF and magnified view, pressing the shutter button halfway will return to the normal view for focusing.
After focus is achieved by following the instructions in Parts II - III, start shooting.
1. Shooting still photos.
- To shoot still photos, press the shutter button completely.
The picture will be taken and the captured image displayed on the LCD monitor.
After the image review ends, the camera will return to Live View shooting automatically.
Pressing the < > will end the Live View shooting.

AF Operation
- Even when focus is achieved, pressing the shutter button halfway will focus again.
- The image brightness may change during and after the AF operation.
- Depending on the subject and shooting conditions, it may take longer to focus or the continuous shooting speed may decrease.
- If the light source changes while the Live View image is displayed, the screen may flicker and focusing may be difficult. If this happens, exit Live View shooting and perform AF under the actual light source under which you are shooting.
2. Shooting movies.
- Press the < > button.
While the movie is being shot, the "
" mark will be displayed on the upper right of the screen.

CAUTION
Image Quality
- When you shoot at high ISO speeds, noise (such as dots of light and banding) may become noticeable.
- Shooting in high temperatures may cause noise and irregular colors in the image.
- If Live View shooting is used continuously for a prolonged period, the camera's internal temperature may rise, and image quality may deteriorate. Always exit Live View shooting when you are not shooting.
- If you shoot a long exposure while the camera’s internal temperature is high, image quality may deteriorate. Exit Live View shooting and wait a few minutes before shooting again.
White [ 
] and Red [ 
] Internal Temperature Warning Icons
] and Red [ ] Internal Temperature Warning Icons- If the camera’s internal temperature increases due to prolonged Live View shooting or under a high ambient temperature, a white [ ] or red [ ] icon will appear.
- The white [ ] icon indicates that the image quality of still photos will deteriorate. It is recommended that you temporarily exit Live View shooting and allow the camera to cool down before shooting again.
- The red [ ] icon indicates that the Live View shooting will soon stop automatically. If this happens, you will not be able to shoot again until the camera's internal temperature decreases. Exit the Live View shooting or turn off the power and let the camera rest for a while.
- Using Live View shooting at a high temperature for a prolonged period will cause the [ ] or [ ] icon to appear earlier. When you are not shooting, always turn off the camera.
- If the camera's internal temperature is high, the quality of images shot with a high ISO speed or long exposure may deteriorate even before the white [ ] icon is displayed.
Shooting Results
- In magnified view, the shutter speed and aperture will be displayed in red. If you take the picture in magnified view, the exposure may not come out as desired. Return to the normal view before taking the picture.
- Even if you take the picture in magnified view, the image will be captured with the image area of the normal view.
Live View Image
- Under low- or bright-light conditions, the Live View image may not reflect the brightness of the captured image.
- Even if a low ISO speed is set, noise may be noticeable in the displayed Live View image under low light. However, when you shoot, the image recorded will have less noise. (The image quality of the Live View image is different from that of the recorded image.)
- If the light source (illumination) within the image changes, the screen may flicker. If this happens, exit Live View shooting and resume Live View shooting under the actual light source.
- If you point the camera in a different direction, it may throw off the Live View image’s correct brightness momentarily. Wait until the brightness level stabilizes before shooting.
- If there is a very bright light source in the image, the bright area may appear black on the LCD monitor. However, the actual captured image will correctly show the bright area.
- In low light, if you set the [
: LCD brightness] to a bright setting, noise or irregular colors may appear in the Live View image. However, the noise or irregular colors will not be recorded in the captured image. - When you magnify the image, the image sharpness may look more pronounced than in the actual image.
Custom Functions
- During Live View shooting, certain Custom Functions will not work (certain settings become invalid). For details, refer to the camera manual instructions.
Lens and Flash
- If the attached lens has an Image Stabilizer and you set the Image Stabilizer (IS) switch to <ON>, the Image Stabilizer will operate at all times even if you do not press the shutter button halfway. The Image Stabilizer consumes battery power and may decrease the number of possible shots. When the Image Stabilizer is not necessary, such as when using a tripod, it is recommended that you set the IS switch to <OFF>.
- The focus preset function is possible for Live View shooting only when using a (super) telephoto lens equipped with the focus preset mode released in and after the second half of 2011.
- FE lock will not work if the built-in flash/external Speedlite is used. Modeling flash will not work if an external Speedlite is used.
