RF lenses continue to gain popularity for use in video production, thanks in part to advances in the video-shooting performance of the camera. One by one, manufacturers have been introducing lenses that can be used seamlessly for shooting both photos and videos, with an emphasis on image quality, AF performance, operability, size, and other aspects of video production. In the RF-S series lineup, Canon has introduced the new RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ, which offers stable zoom operation as a stand-alone lens. It is the first RF lens with a built-in power zoom that is designed for video shooting without compromising mobility. The power zoom allows the user to zoom in and out smoothly, at a constant speed, making it easy for anyone to create impressive, professional-looking videos. Zoom can be operated easily from any angle, using the zoom ring on the lens. The zoom speed can be set in one of two ways. First, the rate at which the zoom ring is turned will affect speed. Turning the zoom ring with small stroke allows you to zoom gradually, while turning it with a large stroke allows you to zoom at high speed. In addition, the zoom speed can be adjusted on the camera side to any one of 15 speed settings.* The overall length of the RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ is fixed, which means the lens does not extend when zooming. This ensures that the camera’s center of gravity remains nearly consistent at all times. In addition to operation from the lens side, the camera body also supports various zoom operations, including the use of a zoom lever* or custom buttons on the camera side, remote control as well as remote operation via a smart device app.
* For cameras equipped with a zoom lever.
